Apollo Bay’s first poetry slam hosted by the international award winning slam poet, Emilie Zoey Baker.
What is a poetry slam?
It’s like a standup comedy night, except the medium is poetry, and it doesn’t have to be funny…although it often is. And the poetry doesn’t have to rhyme… although it sometimes does. And it might sound a lot like rap… although it doesn’t have backing music. The performance can be 30 seconds or 3 minutes.
In short, it’s an opportunity to stand up before an eager audience and share some well chosen words about whatever moves you to a room full of open minds.
Best of all, there’s one coming your way on the 31st July as part of the Apollo Bay Writers Festival, and we’d like as many of you as possible to be a part of it. Stay tuned for more info.
But wait… there are prizes!
While we would really like to people to join in just for the fun of it but, to make it a bit more interesting we’ve added cash prizes . A total prize pool of $200 will be shared 50/50 between the under 18 category and the open category. That’s $100 cash to the person voted most popular by the audience. Your mission, should you choose accept it, is to engage with the audience with the best poem/story you can in under 3 minutes.
The Ab Slam rules of engagement
We want this event to be fun and encouraging. Though we may enjoy high literature, this is an event for everyday people to get involved. So we’re loosening our black polar necks and removing our berets, letting down our hair to make it as simple as possible:
- Performers have up to 3 minutes to deliver
- an original work of their own
It’s that simple.
Organisers will choose the winner in each of the two categories based on who gets the loudest applause, cheers, whistles and foot stomping.
Preparing for Ab Slam
We are holding a workshop on the Sunday morning to give people an extra chance to prepare themselves for the slam that evening. The cost of the workshop is included with a Mech Hall Pass or a ticket to the Ab Slam event. Register for the Spoken Word workshop here.
WARNING: adult themes and strong language are common to poetry slams. People intending to attend should expect the same at Ab Slam.
